The receiving of the 10 Commandments on Har Sinai (Mt. Sinai) took place on Vav Sivan (the 6th of the Hebrew month Sivan). There is a Midrash that says that all Jewish souls were there, those who were born, and those who were yet to be born. On Shavuot it is traditional to study “All Night Long”. This song can be found on Shlock Rocks CD To Unite All Jews . This song is a parody to Lionel Ritchie’s song “All Night Long”.
Other related Shlock Rock songs: “49 Days to Count the Omer” from WoodShlock, “Ready for Your Words” from God Sent Us Email, “The 6th Day of Sivan” from Shlock Rock for Kids Sing Together, “We Got the Torah” from Shlock Rock for Kids Vol. 3, and “The 10 Commandments” From Shlock Rock for Kids Party Time!
Goal: To create a connection between your students and the Torah that underlies the significance of the giving of the Torah to each and every Jew.
Materials Needed: Paints and brushes or sponges, mural paper (or butcher paper roll), various art medium like: cotton, fabric scraps, construction paper, craft sticks, tissue paper, etc… Optional: Photographs of the kids in your class and family members.
Step One: Depending on the size of your class and the time you want to take to work on this project, you can divide your class into groups. One group can work on the back ground (the sky with lightening and clouds), one group can work on the mountain, one group can do the flowers on Mt. Sinai, and one group can work on the people. Since all Jews were there, using photographs of the children’s faces interspersed in the mural is meaningful.
Step Two: Listen to the song “All Night Long” and other related Shlock Rock songs for artistic inspiration.
Step Three: Have the children find a quote from the song to use as a title for the mural. Suggestion: Na’aseh Vanishma – all that Hashem says, we will do!
